What to do?

Contact your state attorney general every time they call you! Get your AG's contact information from this list: http://www.howtofightspam.com/ag.html
Describe the call in the email (how they impersonate your credit card company and whatever else happened), and I suppose a link to this blog wouldn't hurt either.

If you have any other ideas on how to get rid of this company, leave a comment. If you got a call from this company also leave a comment just to say "they called me too", that way we can get an idea of how many people are searching the internet for these people.

Not only does this company violate the federal Do Not Call List, but the also impersonate your credit card company and impersonate "Visa Mastercard" this is wrong and should be stopped. I don't even know what they're up to in the end -- My guess is that they refer people to a separate consolidation company and they get paid for each referral they make. But they could be the company that actually gives out the loans. They could also be part of some large phishing scam -- they sure don't hesitate to hang up on people when they ask too many questions, so I don't doubt that they're up to something criminal. It's just a matter of figuring out if their criminal activity stops at the do not call list violation, harassment and claiming to be calling from a company they are not (not sure if that one is criminal, but it should fall under harassment and Visa or MC could probably sue them for their false claims) They could be involved with deeper scams like phishing for SSNs, credit card numbers and other ID theft info.

When they call me again I will try to keep them on the phone longer so I can get more information on what they're about. I think I will have to give them some fake account numbers before I will be able to get any information out of them (all other attempts resulted in them hanging up on me), but if they actually offer consolidation there has to be a legit company name, address and phone number somewhere.

Purpose of this blog

I repeatedly get calls from a company that claims to be calling about my credit card, but they are NOT calling from my credit card company. Every time they call, I try to get enough information from them to report them to donotcall.gov (I have been on the list for years), but they always hang up on me when I ask them questions about their company. The most recent call I got today, the man on the phone said that they can only consolidate Visa or Mastercard accounts, he said that the name of the company is "Card Member Services" (could very well be a lie), I asked him what phone number I can reach the company at and he actually claimed that they have no inbound phone lines. Right. So after that I asked where they were located and he hung up.

They always hang up on me. Sometimes I start out by saying "you're in violation of the federal do not call list..." and they hang up before I even finish the sentence, but of course they don't stop calling back! This most recent call I got more information than ever because I decided to pretend that I was interested in their product. I asked if they were calling from my credit card company, he admitted that they weren't but when he said "we work with all Visa and Master Card accounts" impling that he was calling from Visa/MC I said "so, you're calling from Visa Mastercard?" he said "no, but they have authorized us to do business on behalf of them" implying that they are not Visa or MC but that they work directly with them (I sure hope that's not the case!).

The phone call starts out with a recording of a woman saying they are calling about my current credit card account. she says there is no problem with the account but that they are calling with an offer or something -- This message directly implies that they are calling on behalf of my credit card company -- I would think that should be illegal, why haven't they been stopped? I can't remember how long I've been getting these calls, but at least for months (I believe they've been calling for a few years, but I can't remember for sure when it started). In any case it has been going on long enough for them to get busted. I always report the call to donotcall.gov, but I suspect that I never have enough information for them to do anything (made-up company name and no phone number...).

I'm going to include the text of various postings to other forums below to help with the google results on this so people who are getting the same calls will be more likely to find the site.

I recieved the same call "it's an urgent call regading your current credit card account", just a few minutes after I placed an order with an online retailer. I cant help but think they two events are connected. I answered because sometimes my CC company calls to verify purchases as a security measure. The caller was not from my bank.

Like a previous poster, I live in Canada. I was out and caller did not leave a message. A lookup of the number shows it as being from Sloan, IOWA -- no doubt, a lovely town but I don't know a soul there. I strongly suspect it's a scam or a telemarketer (or both).

A good part of Iowa is currently flooded. Probably somebody is trying to scam people in order to pay for water damage. Refer them to the Red Cross and hang up.

Call came in the other day, oddly enough - I live in Canada too. Call came looking for my brother - who, the only company that thinks he lives here is Meridian Credit Union due to an address change mixup (I moved, and changed his accounts' address to my house, by mistake - I gave them the wrong account number)...

So someone at Meridian is selling customer information, this much I can prove - the only company that thinks he lives here at my house is them.

Anyways, I listened to the auto-dialer, something about "Better credit rates, nothing is wrong with your account" (definately scammy) I pressed 3 to connect to them, asked to be added to the "Do not Call List" and was promptly hung up on. Legit companies don't act like that.

Same as all the above. Sub-literate person answered when I pressed 1. I was asked **IF** I pressed 1 to lower my interest rate (shouldn't you know that already??) I answered yes, then was asked to provide my area code. I said no, and that I would like to know what organization was calling me. Was told "okay" and hung up on.

Definitely a scam of some sort, preying on the vulnerable.

"Hello, this is rachel at cardholders services calling in reference to your current credit card accounts. There are no problems currently with your account, it is urgent that you contact us concerning your eligibility for lowing your interest rate to as little as 6.9%. your eligibility expires shortly so please consider this your final notice"

"please press the number one on your phone now to speak with a live operator and lower your interest rate"

"card services financial, do you currently have two thousand, five hundred or more dollars in overall credit card debt?"

"Good afternoon, my name is Shawn Carter, and I am with the card services, may i please i have the phone number with the area code first, your speaking from?"

I asked some questions like "do you have a website" "where are you calling from" and he got cagey on me and hung up.

----

When i called 269-537-2039, I get this message:

"Thank you for calling customer service, all of our representatives are busy assisting other customers, please leave your name and phone number, including area code, and we'll get back with you as soon as we can, if you're calling to have your number removed from our database, and placed on our do not call list, please press 2"

then it automatically disconnects you!

Anyone heard from them, got more info?

This is from Niles, Michigan and not showing a name (reverse lookup).
If you had an 800 number... a person could put them on fax auto redial hand up/redial if no answer within 5 seconds. This would rack up their bill till they were willing to talk live rather than hanging up like they did on me when I asked about their company. Trust me... within a few hours they are begging to talk to you and never ever ever call back again!

I can't find any businesses called "Card Services Financial" in Niles (as if I would expect anything else).

All I can say is buyer beware because if a company hides their identity this much... then can't be reputable.

I just googled the phone number that called me on my cell phone and this forum came up so I'll just post.

Ok.. (269) 537-2014 just called me and said:

me
"Hello?"

them
"Oh, I'm sorry but I think I just dialed the wrong phone number. The person I was trying to reach just won $10,000!"

Then they hung up!?!? It was obviously an answering machine and I bet they want me to call back or something, but I don't know.. of course, I'm not calling back, lol.

I'm a popular comedian and stuntman, so I have a feeling it may also be a prank call.. hmm.. oh well

I got a call from the same number on my SKYPE IN account. I have a number (local) to Colorado Springs, I am not sure how he obtained the number. I live in Amsterdam, Netherlands so the call came at 11:23pm local time.

He was selling mortgage crap (I sold my house, so how can you lower my payment, it is as low as it can get). He called the company the "Mortgage Inforamation Centers Research Department" He sounded like a bad DJ. Then he tried to sound folksy. "He was calling on behalf of his mortgage professionals, and he was "suprised" that he had not heard from me yet.

You are probably right about the call back, otherwise he would have blocked his number. He (TED as he calls himself) gave me another number to call back - 877-855-7975 - Googled that and found this http://comment.colostate.edu/index.asp?page=display_article&article_id=326747966

Found a few others, cant find much more.

Amazing. Today (November 6, 2006), over a year after the original poster reported this company, I received the exact same call, today!

They actually played for 3 minutes on my answering machine. I finally picked the phone up after listening to the message loop and pressed "1".

After music played for about a minute (gee, are they that busy?) until an African-American sounding woman answered with her name, and said, "Did you press 1 for credit services?" I said, "Ye-----" -- and then remembering that they could be recording my "yes" response in order to claim that I said "Yes" for some service I didn't ask for, I said, "Could I have your phone number so I could call you back?"

She immediately hung up. A loud BUZZ sound happened as she hung up -- it made me pull the phone away from my ear. I guess they add that as a nice bonus for not being the idiot they hoped for.

Being on the no-call list, I know that this business is up to nothing but pure evil.

I did a Google search for "Card member services" and found it almost impossible to find any positive hit, until I also added "telemarketing" and "rachel" to the search, and found this.

You mean to tell me that they are still offering 6.9%? This is obviously an off-shores scam. I pray nobody gets caught in it or gets their "Yes" response used for some evil.

I wish the do not call would take action against them as their calls are so annoying and they are misleading.

Call is made from 760-942-4155. If you answer and say something short like "Hello", message from old lady says "Oh, I'm sorry, I got the wrong number... bye bye". Company wants to reach answering machines only! If you see this number calling you, answer the phone and randomly talk for a while and then make a beep sound... you will then get a longer message and be asked to call 877-855-7975. If you do this again the next time you call, you will get a message from a different person. I have gotten calls from Mark, Ashley, Evelyn, Kathy, Madison, Diane. This scam has been going on for years.

People I'd Like To Strangle With A Telephone Cord

Within the last week, I've had three messages on my voicemail from the bullshit "This is Annoying Telemarketer calling about your current credit card account. There's no problem, but you only have a limited time to take advantage of reduced rates blah blah fucking blah" outfit, including two today within an hour of each other. Interestingly, the latter two show up with the same (probably faked) Caller ID number but left two different messages, one a man and one a woman. (I don't remember if any of them were the exact same voicemail spam I received several months ago. What's odd is that these calls (and a similar Do Not Call List violator selling carpet cleaning) almost all come during the workday when you'd think most people would not be home. Maybe they figure the unemployed would be more desperate to refinance their credit card debt.

Interestingly, I had two calls on the Caller ID from yesterday that were obvious telemarketers (877 numbers) yet left no voicemail.

The man said he wanted to speak to the cardholder of our visa, mastercard, or amex in the house. I asked what he needed, he said if I gave him my card information, he could offer me lower interest rates. I asked if was a telemarketer. He said no, he wanted to offer lower interest rates to the cardholder. So, I asked him to give me the name of the person he was calling for in my house. I asked him to tell me the actual name of the person he wanted to speak with that was living in my house. He hung up on me. The call back number says "has been disconnected", online it shows belonging to A S Reeves. It showed up on caller-id as Jacksonville, Florida. Sounds like a scam to me!

They just called here. I get lots of marketing calls even though we are on not only the national, but the state's Do Not Call List.

Saw this on the caller ID; tried to call back and got a disconnection notice. Googled it and got this site

Called May 17TH. Left no message.

Rec'd call from this number midday recently. Noticed it had come in several times previously. They do not leave a message. I am going to block this number from my phone.

2007-05-20LM
No message, googled it, found this very cool site. We're on DNC list too. When will this scam get shut down? Obviously, they are still trying to search out more victims, and may be succeeding very well.

This No showed up on my caller ID and when I dialed it, the number had been disconnected. NEEDS to be INVESTIGATED and STOPPED.

2007-05-21cc
this call came in from an unavailable number stated they were "Card Services" offering to lower my credit card interest rates when I asked who was I speaking with, they just kept saying card services, I kept asking card services from where and they would say visa and I asked what visa, they would say visa and mastercard when I asked how this service worked and if this is legit how do you not even know my name they hung up

2007-05-22djs
Had several calls over 3 weeks. A robot voice says, "Hi, I'm Heather from Account Services. We're calling about your credit card." At this point I hang up. We don't have a credit card. We're also on the Do Not Call List. I'm disabled. It kills me to dash to the phone. This is one of the reasons robotic calls are illegal in Washington State, where I'm at. I don't know the number. Don't have caller ID. I googled, "'heather, "account services", "credit card"' and found this site. Great site! We've got to stop these people.

Called me (in Ontario, Canada) at 9:15 am about lowering interest rates. Called Capital One, confirmed it's a scam. Beware!

By the way, the number (if you do a search on it) comes back as:

Type: Land
LineProvider: Birch Telecom
Location: Kansas City, MO

About lowering credit card interest rates. Gotta be a scam!

2007-05-25Joe
Message was same as "bmw".

I asked who they represent and the rep. (not Rachel, lol!) hesitantly gave me a list of credit cards provider names (mostly retail orgainzations).

I asked for the representative's supervisor and was eventually disconnected.

Makes you wonder about how legitimate they are if there are no supervisors around to talk to upset potential customers.

Do not give out your c/c information over the phone to anyone. You never know who is listening.

Even if these folks are legitimate, what do they do wtih the database and information after their phone campaign ends?

2007-05-29Bob2
My credit card company would not make this call. This is probably a scam

Press 1 to lower rates

Called today in Nova Scotia. Weird message - what losers.

Called A-GAIN (like 5th time). I pressed '1' and when operator came on, she said, "did you press 1 to lower rates", I said, "no, I pressed 1 to get off your damned list!".

She hung up on me.

Repeated calls back yielded a busy tone.

2007-06-11Thomas
Sorry, forgot to add, I'm in Ottawa Canada

Just called here too. Lowering my rates on a card I don't have.

2007-06-14Rose
Spammers who use different numbers, blocked one the other night, only for them to use this number. Tonight after I answered the phone with "hello" I got a computer telling me "invalid option, please press 1". The option I chose was to hang up.
Btw, I live in NW Ontario.

2007-06-15Gumboot
From BC, Canada. Got the same message, "press one as this is your last chance to lower your interest rate." no company or name left. I just deleted the meaasge.

2007-07-15Arnold
something about it being urgent for us to contact them about getting a better (mortgage?) interest rate.

2007-07-18Alan Rees
Got the call, (BC) tried calling back but got a busy signal. Message says "press 1 to ...." but hitting the "1" does nothing

Call regarding "my current credit card account" telling me there is no problem with my account, but that I should contact them immediatly to receive a lower interest rate. This is not a call from any of the credit card companies I currently deal with. No answer when I tried to call back to get the name of the company.

It was a cut off message saying it was my final notice or my interest rates would go up. "Please consider this your final notice. Please press one to speak to a live operator and lower your interest rates. Press three to discontinue further notices."
I didn't recognize the area code so I never answered the phone. I looked it up in the phone book and saw that it was from Iowa. I called back and the line was busy so I figured it was a scam because I had no credit cards from the states.
